Cougars too tough for Sharks...
Depsite some promising individual performances at the Scott McRorie 9s last weekend, the Sharks slumped to a 60 - 12 defeat at the hands of the Valley Cougars, at Nelson RFC, on Sunday 18th May. With the loss of five players on the Sunday morning, the Sharks still travelled to Treharris, with a 17-man squad, but couldn't live with the well drilled Valleys team. Further injuries during the game led to an even tougher task, with several new, young players having to play more of a part in the game than planned - but the young guns certainly gave their all, in a difficult opening encounter. The Sharks managed only two converted tries, but with several key players due to return, they will be hoping for a stronger performance against the Blue Bulls, whop they play at home, on Saturday 24th May. This time last year, the Sharks received a similar lesson from the Cougars, losing heavily at home, in the first game of the 2007 season. However, promnising performances were subsequently put in against the Torfaen Tigers and the Blackwood Bulldogs, as well as the big second half comeback, and defeat of the Cardiff Demons at Furnace, last June. So it's back to the drawing board for the Sharks, as they look to regroup this week, as they prepare for the visit of the Blue Bulls on the 24th.
Strong Showing at Scott McRorie 9s...
A new look Sharks team put in some great performances at the Scott McRorie 9s, held at Aberavon Green Stars RFC, on Sunday 11th May. Several new players, including Christiaan Roets, Matthew John and Nathan Jenkins, joined Sharks regulars like Jonny Griffiths, Alan Pope and Dai Norman, to put down a marker for the coming Conference season. Grouped with the Steelers, the Tigers and Aberystwyth Uni, the Sharks, who were displaying their brand new kit for the first time this season, got off to a flying start against the students with a 24 - 0 victory, with some fast paced, flowing rugby. The students struggled to live with the Sharks, with several of their first team players unavailable for the tournament and following some unfortunate injuries, they had to withdraw from the competition. The Sharks then went on to beat the NPT Steelers, who had already lost to a well drilled Torfaen Tigers team. That set up a mouthwatering group showdown between the Sharks and the Tigers, and although both sides knowing they had already qualified for the semi finals, there was certainly no let up here. Once again, the high standard of rugby continued throughout this game, and the Tigers looked as though they were going to seal it when they went 22 - 14 ahead. However, the Sharks fought back, and, in the heat of battle, both sides claimed victory at the final whistle. Amongst the confusion, It was later confirmed that the game had been drawn at 22 - 22. The Tigers went through as group winners, due to a greater points difference. That meant the Sharks were to face holders Cardiff Demons in the Semi Finals, who were winners of their group, containing Newport Titans and the Valley Cougars. Again, the two sides were evenly matched, and as the match approached full time, the Sharks led 14 - 10. However, two late tries for the Demons sealed for the holders, who also avenged their defeat by the Sharks, at Furnace United RFC in 2007, with this victory. In the other Semi Final, the Tigers went through against the Titans, to set up the Final with the Demons. In the Plate Final, the Valley Cougars triumphed over the NPT Steelers. The Cardiff Demons eventually ran out convincing winners over the Torfaen Tigers 28 - 10 and held on to the Scott McRorie 9s trouphy for another year. Final word goes to the Sharks for an outstanding 9s tournament, with many stand-out performances - well done boys, keep it going for the rest of the season!

Clive Griffiths Joins the Sharks as Patron...
| The Sharks are delighted to announce that Clive Griffiths, former player with St Helens and former coach at Warrington, Wales and Great Britain, has agreed to become the very first Sharks RLFC patron. Although Clive's current committments at Worcestror RFC, where he is assisting Mike Ruddock as defence coach, will not allow him the opportunity to allocate a significant amount of his time to helping the Sharks on a practical basis, we are extremely grateful that he has offerred his support to the Sharks. The Sharks are of course based in Llanelli - where Clive played much of his time as a union player, before moving to rugby league. We certainly recognise Clive's acheivements in both codes and we are fully aware of the reputation that goes before him. Clive is a very well respected coach - particularly in defence, and his strength in that area has been brought to the fore in his work to date. He has many achievents to his name, in recent times he helped Mike Ruddock to the Grand Slam success of 2005 as defence coach. We are very grateful to Clive for his support this season and we look forward to hopefully meeting up with him in the summer, when the Sharks welcome the Blue Bulls, the Tigers and the Titans to Llanelli.
